GO Wide: GO F-24 Small Format UV Flatbed Printer

Is flatbed bed size important?

At 24-inches by 18-inches, the bed of the GO F-24 UV flatbed printer offers one of the largest sizes of any professional flatbed printer under 24-inches. For the purposes of comparison, the image shows the full size of the F-24 vs. the Mimaki UJF-6042, the Roland LEF-20, the DCS 1024UV. As you will note, the F-24 offers 432 sq. inches, the UJF offers 396 sq. inches, the LEF-20 offers 260 sq. inches and the 1024UV offers 240 sq inches.

We started off by asking, "is size important?" The answer is yes. Having a larger size means more products can be imaged at one time. GO's F-24 small format UV printer is the clear leader with the size metric. For added information about the GO 24 UV, please go to: http://goo.gl/9nhELx.

Sawgrass's ChromaBlast-R Cotton Transfer System / Ink a Threat to DTG?

Several weeks ago Sawgrass announced the release of a new cotton transfer ink for Ricoh Printers called ChromaBlast-R. This announcement is a really interesting twist to the world of DTG and to the world of transfers. Of course Sawgrass had previously announced a solution for specific EPSON printers, but the inclusion of pigement ink for RICOH print engines gives them a strategic advantage. The reason for this is there are so many different brands of EPSON based DTG printers coming from Asia it is a challenge to understand which printers really work. Certainly from a channel perspective Sawgrass has a much better opportunity with the RICOH print engine, and we expect a more precise marketing message.

The announcement offers some real advantages against DTG offerings and it will be interesting to follow Sawgrass as they migrate this product into their traditional sales channel.  Our overall impression is they should do well with the product and here's why (all based on reading, no actual usage):

Here are some product details on the ChromaBlast R printer, ink and paper.
  • RICOH Printer with one set of ChromaBlast R Ink $1,639 (from Sign Warehouse)
  • 100 sheets of ChromaBlast Transfer Media $75
  • 60 mil ChromaBlast Pigment Ink $90
An overview of how the ChromaBlast R product compares to other DTG products is as follows:

PROs

  • Print engine costs substantially less than other DTG printers
  • Only offering of desktop RICOH inkjet printers which makes for a better integrated solution
  • Full solution including printer, ink and paper
  • Ink costs seem to be less, although this metric is a bit misleading
  • Speed is superior
  • Hand is good after garment is washed
  • Longevity of transfer is good

CONs
  • No white ink solution at this time
  • Imaging is not direct; print to paper and then transfer
  • Must factor both transfer paper and ink into cost per shirt calculations
  • Must wash garment because paper transfer leaves a polymer coating

Sawgrass ChromaBlast R vs EPSON SureColor F2000
How does the new offering from Sawgrass compete with the "Big E's" new SureColor F2000? We think Sawgrass offers a better value.  Here's a quick rundown of the F2000 and a simple cost comparison:

  • EPSON SureColor F2000 Printer-$19,995
  • 600 ml Ink Cartridges $229.50
  • EPSON Pre-treatment Solution (20 Liter Bottle) $679.95
  • Printhead Cleaning Kit (Every 1000 Images) $94.95
As you will note above, the cost of entry for the RICOH system from Sawgrass is much lower by a factor of ten times. Whereas the everyday running costs of the RICOH may be a bit higher than the EPSON system, when all is taken into consideration the daily costs seem to be similar. With both systems there is no mention of printhead replacement costs.

Our overall impression of the new product from Sawgrass, as compared to DTG is positive. We will address how the product compares to transfer printers, such as the GO UNO and OKI 920WT in a later post.

GO's Business Goes to the Dog (s)

Graphics One announces a new mascot and part time guard dog, Bugsy Badalyan. Bugsy whose owner is David Badlayan, GO's West Coast Sales Manager, has been coming to GO's office since he was a baby. During that time we have started using Bugsy in our product reviews and have also used him as a part time guard dog, when he's not sleeping. According to David Badalyan," Bugsy is an English Bull Dog who has been training everyone at GO on how to best work with dogs and we are now saying for sure the business has gone to the dog (s)."

The "Big E" (Epson) Enters the Direct-To-Garment T-Shirt Printing Market--Welcome SureColor SC-F2000

The Big E--Epson--seem to be entering all segments of digital imaging and now have a new product called the SureColor SC-F2000 Direct-to-Garment printer. Additionally the pricing of the new SureColor SC-F2000 starts at around $20,000 and for dark and black does not include the pre-coater which costs an added $6,000.

Shipping in October of this year, the SureColor SC-F2000, offers either dual CMYK or CMYK plus White imaging for t-shirt and garment production. The t-shirt printing speed is approximately 27 seconds for light and white and 111 seconds for dark and black. The SureColor SC-F2000 still does not measure up to the speed offered by OKI LED transfer products, such as the GO UNO, pro920WT or 711WT. Of course OKI based transfer units offer speed of about 2 seconds per transfer. When pricing is considered with the speed there is no doubt the OKI based products offer the best value. Watch for more comparison information on the EPSON SureColor SC-F2000 verses the GO UNO, OKI 920WT and OKI 711WT in future blogs.

SEPIAX "Direct;to-Anything" Water Based Resin Inks--Ten Facts

Graphics One has been offering SEPIAX Ink for a number of years now. In the next month we will have some exciting news regarding a new print-and-cut device which will feature the use of SEPIAX. We believe this will be a major new capability, for those who are doing garment transfers, especially for those who are concerned about using eco-solvent inks for doing garment transfers.

A recent article on solvent inks in Digital Output magazines stated, "one of the more intriguing terms used is eco-solvent ink. To most people, "eco" means ecological. But these inks generally contain glycol esters or glycol ether esters – both derived from mineral oil – hardly a renewable resource or an ecologically sound process." An overview of the Facts about SEPIAX ink is as follows:

Ten Facts about SEPIAX Ink:
1. Prints on virtually any substrate*
2. No substrate coating needed
3. Water based resin with exceptional pigment properties
4. Eco-friendly , non-toxic, non-flammable, odorless
5. Ink 30% -50% less for same coverage
6. Adhesion and durability rivaling eco-solvent
7. Outdoor durability up to three years
8. Clog reduced formula
9. Compatible with all EPSON piezo printheads
10. Not ordinary latex—It’s better.
*Substrate surface must be between 45C~55C

Based on the Mutoh ValueJet 1624W and 1638W Dye Sub Printers, GO is pleased to announce a professional upgrade to these units which is only available through the GO and its partners. The new Mutoh ValueJet 1624W and 1638W units are now upgraded to HD PRO versions. What's included with the VJ 1624W and VJ1638W? The standard printers are upgraded to include the heavy duty media handling system which allows rolls of substrates weighing up to 175 pounds to be used with the printer. This allows a user to image thousands of neon dye sub colors with a complete array of standard colors. GO Ships New Heat Press: GO Metalnox EL 600

GO Metalnox EL 600 Heat Press
During our recent training session an announcement was made regarding GO migrating over to our new GO Metalnox EL 600 16"x20" heat press.

As most are aware, using a heat press for dye sublimation is much less demanding than using a heat press for transfers. The reason for this is that dye sublimation is using heat, not as much pressure for imaging to the garment. Conversely when doing a transfer it is imperative that the heat press have high consistent pressure and high consistent and accurate heat. If the heat press does not have these capabilities then a user will have issues producing good transfers.

The new GO Metalnox EL 600 accomplishes both consistent and high pressure and consistent heat throughout the entire platen. Listing for $1,595, the EL 600 is now our standard heat press for imaging transfers. An overview is as follows:

• 16” x 20” Swing Away Manual Heat Press
• Force Multiplier Pressure System for Consistent High Pressure Over Entire Platen
• Wide Open Platen with Swing Top for Convenience and Ease of Use
• Machine Cast Aluminum Frame with High Pressure Capability Provides Uniform Pressure
• Fully Digital Temperature and Time Control
• Double Teflon Covered Plates
• Interchangeable Platens Available
• Manufactured in the Americas

Wasatch and Graphics One Team to Profile GO NeoTack for Use with Mutoh VJ 1638W Dye Sub Printer

Recently Graphics One hosted Wasatch to profile GO's NeoTack Dye Sub Ink for use with Mutoh's 1638W Dye Sub Printer. The challenge with the new ink is to profile NeoTack CMYK (Super Black) with three neon colors--Neon Red, Neon Yellow and Neon Blue-with Orange without sacrificing speed or quality. Richard and Kerby successfully completed a number of ICC profiles of our Neon Dye Sub colors and also enhanced our Super Black dye sub ink results. The results have been astonishing.

We are able to print at full speed 360x360--approximately 1000 sq feet per hour, without any banding. Additionally, the colors pop and offer a density not seen in the market previously. The configuration is using Wasatch SoftRIP with Mutoh's VJ 1638W Dye Sub printer imaging GO NeoTack dye sub ink in an eight color mode. The density of the colors and the lack of banding makes this one of the best combinations we have seen in the market. Graphics One will be showing this configuration during the ISA show next week in Las Vegas.

More FAQs on GO NeoTack Dye Sub Ink--How Does Tack Work?

Does NeoTack actually have tack in the ink?
Yes. GO NeoTack’s use of tack is patented and is the only dye sublimation ink to offer this capability.

What impact does the tack have on the flowability of the ink?
GO NeoTack has been tested for the past twelve months and has completed internal certification for use with the most advanced EPSON printheads. Extensive long term testing ensures the runnability and no clog formulation of the ink.

How does the tack work?
GO NeoTack employs the use of a chemically inert nano-agent which is heat activated at 140 C when using standard heat presses, calendars or other heat units. Once heat is applied, chemical bonding occurs and the ink adheres to both the fabric and the paper.

Does the use of tack totally eliminate the need for tack paper?
Not in all cases. With some fabrics there is not enough of fabric pile to create a strong bond. In such cases, we recommend testing to ensure tack paper is not needed. When using GO NeoTack without tack paper, a user can expect to save between 10-25% in paper costs.

Can NeoTack be used with tack dye sub paper?
Yes. When NeoTack is used with tack dye paper the user will have super tack capabilities. Users have been astounded with the crisp, clean lines and edges provided when using NeoTack with both standard and tack dye sub papers.

What is the use of tack paper and is there an extra cost for tack paper?
Tack paper is used to eliminate ghosting or “double imaging” from the heating process. Generally tack dye sub paper is between 10-25% more expensive than normal dye sub paper.

What type of packaging is offered for GO NeoTack?
GO NeoTack is packaged in our InkPack mylar bags and used with our GO bulk ink system. The InkPacks come degassed and eliminate both contaminents and evaporation which occurs with open containers. GO’s InkPacks enhance the overall performance of our ink and are normally used with GO’s low cost bulk ink system.

What is the list price of GO NeoTack?
GO NeoTack’s List Price is $125 per liter and $65 per 500 ml bag.

Are the GO NeoTack inks covered by a patent license?
Yes. All dye sub inks offered by GO are licensed under U.S. Patent No. 5, 488,907.

Does GO offer any special bundles for changing over to GO NeoTack ink?
Yes. The NeoTack (4 Color) changeover costs includes the following items and is listed for $1,035
-Bulk Ink System
-One Liter CMYK Ink
-One Liter Flush
-Four uFill Cassettes
If an 8 color system, please add $310.

GO NeoTack Dye Sub Ink Neon FAQs

What makes GO NeoTack different than other dye sublimation inks?
GO NeoTack truly offers capabilities not offered by any other dye sublimation inks including:
  •       Twelve Color Dye Sub Inkset Including Three Neon Colors
  •       Neon Colors for Use in Either Composite or Spot Colors
  •       Patented Enhanced Tack For Dye Sub Paper Cost Savings of Up to 25%
  •       Crisp, Clean Imaging Due to Tack Capabilites
  •       Color Gamut 30-40% Larger with the Use of Neon Colors
  •       Hybrid Capabilities for Both Dye Sublimation and Direct-to-Fabric Imaging
  •       No Clog Formulation for All EPSON Printhead Based Printers
  •       Excellent UV Stability
How many dye sub ink colors are in the NeoTack family?
The GO NeoTack inkset offers twelve colors including traditional Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Light Cyan, Light Magenta, Neon Red, Neon Yellow, Neon Blue, Super Black, Orange and Violet.

What is the difference between fluo or fluorescent digital dye sub ink and GO's neon dye sub inks?
The American Screen Printing Association defines fluorescent inks as special inks which contain extremely bright “neon” pigment colors. Within digitial dye sublimation the term fluorescent is used by different companies to mean different things. For example, Sawgrass Technologies offers fluorescent colors which are invisible in natural light, but become visible when exposed to a black light. Most other fluo dye sub inksets are recommended for spot color use only, such as Sensient, not for combining with other colors in their inkset. GO’s neon dye sub inks use neon pigments and offer the ability to image both spot and composite colors and with no black light needed to see the truly outrageous colors.

Can GO's neon inks be used with the other colors in the inkset?
GO’s NeoTack can be used in both a spot color capacity and also to create composite colors. In fact, in a four color inkset users are astounded with the incredible range of colors produced by NeoTack ink.

Does NeoTack only come only in neon colors?
No. GO NeoTack has traditional CMYK inks as well as the added colors. There are a total of twelve colors.

Can you use GO NeoTack Neon Colors with dye sub inks from other manufacturers?
We do not recommend it.  GO NeoTack is recommended only for use with the NeoTack family of dye sub inks.

Can neon inks impact a four color printer?
Yes. We have users who use traditional CMK colors with Neon Yellow. The use of Neon Yellow when combined with traditional CMYK offers incredible neon Reds, Limes, and Yellows.

How much is the color gamut extended with the use of GO NeoTack Neon inks?
When using either 4, 6 or 8 color configurations with GO neon inks, a user can expect an expanded color gamut of between 30-40% greater than a standard dye sub inkset.

What is the difference between GO Super Black and GO Standard Black?
Generally we recommend that users print with GO Super Black ink as it is provides a true deep black without any tints. In situations where lighter black is needed, we recommend using the standard black.

What is the shelf life of GO NeoTack?
Twelve months.

Which printers work well with GO NeoTack Dye Sub Ink?
GO NeoTack was developed for all printers using EPSON printheads and works especially well with Mutoh ValueJet 1628W, Mutoh ValueJet 1624W, Mutoh RJ-900X, and GO's AquaMax Dye Sub printers.

What happens in a four color printer if neon yellow is being used and traditional yellow needs to be used (for example if you need a mustard yellow color)?
The simplest way to change the ink is to take out the neon color InkPack (or any other NeoTack color) and insert the replacement color InkPack. Once this new color is inserted we recommend printing a solid color of the replaced ink so that the old color ink will be printed out of the printer’s ink delivery system.

Are all twelve NeoTack colors compatible with each other?
Yes. The entire set of colors are compatible to each other, including the neon colors.
